Restoration of a Historic Bridge over the Bērzaune River in Veckalsnava

07/08/2022

As part of this project, a historic stone masonry bridge over the Bērzaune River in Veckalsnava, originally built in 1930, was restored. The bridge consists of two massive stone masonry arches.

During the renovation, the historical appearance of the bridge was carefully preserved.

The foundations, walls, and arches—constructed from fieldstones—were restored. As the original mortar had begun to deteriorate, the internal structure was reinforced with rebar and encased in concrete.

The riverbanks, also built from fieldstones, were rebuilt, and the bridge railings were partially clad with granite slabs.

All joints on the exterior were cleaned and refilled, and finishing works were carried out on the underside of the structure.

The project concluded with landscaping and site improvement works in the surrounding area.
